Rievaulx Abbey

'Everywhere peace, everywhere serenity, and a marvellous freedom from the tumult of the world'. Those words could describe Rievaulx today, for it is one of the most atmospheric of all the ruined abbeys of the North. In fact they were written over 8 centuries ago by St Aelred, the monastery's third abbot. Built in the 13th century, its soaring beauty conveys the glory and splendour that Rievaulx once possessed. Discover the spectacular and extensive remains of the first Cistercian monastery in northern England. Experience the unrivalled peace and serenity of this 12th century site in the beautiful valley of the River Rye. Trace the past glories and splendours of the thriving community of monks who lived and worked here. Take an audio tour of the magnificent soaring ruins, available in French, Swedish and Japanese. Explore our extensive gift shop and picnic in the lovely grounds.
